Stan the Man against the Big Train. In three games, the '46 Cardinals didn't score an earned run against Walter Johnson--yet they managed to win Game 7 of a pitching-dominated series and advance to meet the 1953 Dodgers in the second round.
GAME 1 at Sportsman's Park: Johnson goes eight shutout innings, giving up just three hits in a 3-0 victory. Roger Peckinpaugh drives in two runs with a single and a squeeze bunt. Howie Pollet takes the tough-luck loss.
GAME 2 at Sportsman's Park: Harry Brecheen gives up 11 hits in 6 2/3 innings--yet no Senators scored on him! Whitey Kurowski triples home two runs in the first off George Mogridge and adds another RBI later as the Cards win 6-2 to tie the series.
GAME 3 at Griffith Stadium: Murry Dickson fires a six-hitter and five Cards drive in runs in a 5-1 St. Louis victory. Tom Zachary takes the loss.
GAME 4 at Griffith Stadium: In front of the home folks, Johnson gives up just six hits and scores the game's only run in the third on Sam Rice's single as Senators tie series 2-2. Pollet, with a series ERA of 0.56, drops to 0-2.
GAME 5 at Griffith Stadium: Max Lanier, getting a start to give the Cards' staff a break, throws a complete-game five-hitter as the Cards win 2-0 to take a 3-2 lead back to St. Louis. Mogridge pitches well but loses for the second time.
GAME 6 at Sportsman's Park: Needing a road win to get Johnson back on the hill in Game 7, Zachary gives up six hits and no earned runs as the Nats hammer Brecheen and the Cards, 6-2. Zachary also contributed an RBI single in Washington's 5-run 6th.
GAME 7 at Sportsman's Park: Musial drives in Red Schoendienst, who had reached when Goose Goslin dropped a fly ball, with the first run in the 3rd. Pollet and Johnson again matched zeros. Johnson left in the 8th for a pinch-hitter, and in the 9th, Goslin doubled and Joe Judge singled to tie it. Dickson came on to retire the side and in the bottom of the 9th, Musial, facing Firpo Marberry, reached second when Rice dropped a fly ball. Enos Slaughter bunted him to third and when Kurowski grounded to short, Musial beat Peckinpaugh's throw home with the series-winning run.
LEADERS: Cards: Musial .400; Kurowski 5 RBIs, Slaughter with the series' only home run. Dickson 2-0 with an 0.90 ERA. Pollet 0.74, but 0-2. Staff ERA 1.74.
Senators: Peckinpaugh .381, Earl McNeely .360, Goslin .304. Senator pitchers batted .316 (Zachary was 4 for 6). Johnson no earned runs in 24 IP, 14 hits, 7 BB, 20 K. Senators ERA 1.76. |
