Winner: 1965 Twins

Anything can happen in a best-of-seven series. And anything almost did: The 1962 Mets--included in this tournament because they were part of the old-timer teams set--forced a seventh game against the 1965 Twins, and gave 'em a scare in that game too before falling.

GAME 1 at Metropolitan Stadium: Mudcat Grant sets down 19 straight between the third and eighth innings and the Twins win 3-0. Grant allows only four hits, walked none and struck out 10. Al Jackson pitches well but takes the loss.

GAME 2 at Metropolitan Stadium: Mets take their first lead of the series in the 7th on Jim Hickman's 3-run homer, but the Twins tie it 4-4 with two runs in the bottom half. In the ninth, Rich Rollins singles with two outs and Earl Battey walks against reliever Ken Mackenzie. Pinch-hitter Andy Kosco doubles into the gap, scoring Rollins with the winning run and giving Minnesota a 2-0 series lead. Jim Merritt gets one out in the top of the ninth for the victory.

GAME 3 at Polo Grounds: Camilo Pascual and Jay Hook in a fine battle in Manhattan. Each team scores in the 7th--the Mets on a pinch homer by Marv Throneberry--and the game goes to extra innings 3-3. Frank Thomas leads off the 11th with a single off the weary Pascual, and Al Worthington enters. After Rod Kanehl sacrifices, Felix Mantilla singles to score Thomas with the winner, 4-3. Mackenzie gets the win with two innings of hitless relief.

GAME 4 at Polo Grounds: Jerry Kindall's two-run single in the 8th gives Twins a 3-2 lead, but the amazin' Mets rally with five in the bottom of the eighth on Chris Cannizzaro's two-run single off Mudcat Grant and pinch-hitter Gene Woodling's three-run homer off Bill Pleis. Mets need four pitchers in the ninth to turn back the Twins 7-5, with Mackenzie getting pinch-hitter Bernie Allen to pop out with the tying runs on base. Series tied 2-2.

GAME 5 at Polo Grounds: Twins outhit Mets 19-8, but again it goes to the last at-bat. Mets again take lead in the bottom of the eighth, 6-5, on another pinch hit by Woodling, this time a single. But Twins score twice in 9th on Jimmie Hall's RBI single and Bob Allison's infield out. Undaunted, the Mets tie it on Mantilla's one-out triple following a walk to Thomas. But Worthington strands Mantilla at third, and the Twins finally win it 8-7 in the 10th on Don Mincher's RBI double off Bob Moorhead, the sixth Met pitcher.

GAME 6 at Metropolitan Stadium: No quit in these Mets--they get five in the seventh, three on a Hickman homer, to beat the Twins 6-3. Hook goes the distance, giving up only three hits. Jim Perry takes the defeat.

GAME 7 at Metropolitan Stadium: Can the Mets take two in a row at the Met? Not quite. An error by Hickman leads to a 4-run third and the Twins build an 8-3 lead against Jackson. But the two runs they added in the eighth on an Allison homer turn out to be the difference as the Mets score three in the ninth and get the tying run to the plate. John Klippstein gets pinch-hitter Gil Hodges to fly out, saving it for Grant and moving the Twins into the second round against the 1911 Athletics.
